Flashback 4

“Who’s there?”

Aubrey gripped the metal bat firmly, so tight that she was beginning to not feel her fingers.

As she delicately descended the steps, her ragged breaths became even shallower. Before whoever was intruding in her private quarters was able to kill her, she would more likely die of a heart attack.

She had promised Richie that she would lock up. She had even called him and informed him that she had double checked when she really hadn’t. Now she would have to pay for it.

The sound became keener the closer she got to the first level.

First it was the sound of shuffling, as if someone was pacing back and forth.

The shuffling had stopped.

Now it was heavy breathing. She couldn’t pinpoint where they were coming from.

This was why Richie had bought her a gun but when she even peered at the shelf, she received chills. She hated it, but he was so right as always.

They moved in a better neighborhood, but he had many enemies. Enemies that wouldn’t mind coming into her home, raping her and killing her.

She should have listened.

“911 is coming. They are already on the way.” That was a lie. She had only called Richie who didn’t answer. The police weren’t to be called. There was too much going on to have them in any of their business, even if she was in danger. She knew that as if it was written in a Clarke guidebook.

“Please.”

It was a moan, a cry from a man. A plea.

She still paused. “Who is that? Identify yourself!” she yelled.

She would have been killed in bed if she didn’t get up to use the bathroom. She had to relieve her bladder after her many drinks through the night. Now she was wobbly with a hangover, with a bat in her hand creeping in her own home, unsure of what she would, or could really do if someone had been there to kill her.

“Lee,” a distressed voice came from the kitchen area.

She quickened her steps but never dropped her weapon. What the hell was he doing there? She clapped twice automating the lights.

He was collapsed with his back against the wall. As if he was outside in below zero weather, his entire body trembled. “Are you hurt? Did you get shot?”

There was no blood. Upon further review of his face and body, he had no physical damage. It did nothing to explain why he was shaking on her floor with tears dripping down his face. He muttered something over and over, something incoherent so she dropped to her knees. “Lee, do you need me to call Richie?”

He shook and held his midsection as he rocked back and forth, his back making a thump against the wall.

“I killed him. I killed him.”

She should have panicked. She should have asked who. She should have asked him if Richie was okay, because Richie could have been the ‘him’ in Lee’s confessional mantra.

She didn’t have to though.

She already knew.

She knew what Richie had been planning to do with him from day one.
